The National Retail Federation (NRF) is urging the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to negotiate after the Trump administration slapped a 25% tariff on imports from these countries. NRF's David French warns that these tariffs could hike prices for American consumers and hurt businesses. Major retailers like Target are already feeling the heat, predicting a hit to their profits. Meta’s Ray-Ban Smart Glasses: The Future of AI

Wearables or Just a Bold Experiment?

tom meehan

Tom Meehan, CEO CONTROLTEK
comments@talklpnews.com

Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses represent an important step toward making wearable technology a part of everyday life. Meta describes the glasses as "the next big thing" and aims for them to be seen as more than just a tech novelty. So, what is this thing? At first glance, the Ray-Ban smart glasses look like any other pair of Ray-Bans. That's by design. Unlike the more provocative — and somewhat clunky — look of Facebook's Video Recording glasses from 2016, the Ray-Ban smart glasses do not announce themselves to the world. They also do not make sounds. If you’re going to record something, you’d better have a planned narrative. The glasses are hands-free. They also have an "always-on" Meta AI assistant, a feature that could be a real breakthrough.

Notwithstanding Meta's hefty up-front investment—over $100 billion directed toward AR and VR—the adoption of smart glasses on a large scale seems quite uncertain. The push provided by AI-enhanced features—like real-time translation and object recognition—propels these technologies forward. The smart glasses themselves, however, for some feel more like an all-in-one experiment than a legitimate product at this point. The rumored next-gen model could be a game-changer—especially if it incorporates an actual display for the augmented reality overlays that the current model can't pull off. Even so, the unavoidable challenges of guaranteed privacy and consumer enthusiasm (or lack thereof) might keep these things from achieving smartphones' level of penetration.

Walmart CEO: Grocery prices causing customer ‘stress behaviors’

As the cost of groceries continues to climb, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon says customer spending habits indicate the rising costs are significantly hurting shoppers. In particular, those at the lower end of the income scale appear to be having the biggest issue toward the end of the month.

During an event held by the Economic Club of Chicago, McMillon said his company is seeing “stress behaviors” among budget-conscious customers, according to Bloomberg.

“You can see that the money runs out before the month is gone, you can see that people are buying smaller pack sizes at the end of the month," McMillon said.

McMillon went on to say the habits of customers have remained steady over the last year, regardless of income. In general, shoppers are focusing on getting the best value they can, McMillon said.
