Target Brings Back Human Cashiers After Massive Theft Losses

Target is hitting the brakes on self-checkout after a surge in theft-related losses, joining a growing number of retailers rethinking the once-touted convenience of DIY lanes. Despite claiming the change is about enhancing customer experience, the move follows reports of massive shrink—over $500 million in 2023 alone—and high-profile theft cases exploiting self-checkout systems. As other chains like Walmart, Dollar General, and Five Below follow suit, the retail industry may be entering a new phase where theft prevention takes priority over speed and autonomy at the register.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy plays up his retail rivals’ worst nightmare: Trump’s tariffs may actually strengthen Amazon

As new U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports threaten to squeeze domestic Amazon sellers, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy says Chinese-based sellers may actually gain a competitive edge. Because many U.S. sellers rely on marked-up Chinese goods through middlemen, they’ll face steeper import costs than their China-based rivals who sell directly to American consumers on the platform. Jassy emphasized Amazon’s resilience—bolstered by its massive seller diversity and booming grocery segment—as competitors struggle to adapt to rising costs and shifting supply chains.

Experts anticipate the agency will return to a business-friendly approach that emphasizes voluntary compliance over penalties, while Biden-era rules like expanded injury reporting and the Walkaround Rule face likely reversals.

Why human oversight is essential to mitigate emerging risks

Artificial Intelligence is moving faster than any technology we’ve seen. From weather forecasts to healthcare to the employee experience, AI is being integrated into our lives from every direction. It’s also a catalyst for huge investments in the tech landscape–OpenAI recently poured almost $12 billion into AI infrastructure startup CoreWeave, and Nvidia is investing several hundred billion in AI chipmaking in the US.

Retail employee exposes stockroom disaster at major big-box retailer: 'A serious ... issue'

A viral Reddit post from a Walmart grocery worker has sparked outrage after revealing that mountains of produce—like strawberries and bananas—are being routinely discarded due to chronic overstocking.

Employees from multiple stores echoed the issue, pointing to a systemic supply chain problem that leads to perfectly edible food rotting instead of reaching consumers. While Walmart claims to divert over 80% of its waste and has food donation programs, these frontline reports suggest a troubling disconnect between corporate sustainability goals and on-the-ground reality.
