How Technology is Catching Hidden Hazards Before People Get Hurt

In workplaces, shopping centers, and even homes, safety has long relied on human attention and maintenance routines.

Yet, slips, trips, and falls remain some of the most common causes of injury each year.

Now, as technology begins to blend with safety science, a new form of prevention is emerging, one that detects hazards before a person ever has the chance to get hurt. From AI-powered cameras to pressure-sensitive flooring, innovation is changing how we think about everyday risks.

This shift represents more than convenience. It is about making environments truly responsive to the people inside them. When a floor becomes slick or lighting fails in a stairwell, smart systems can recognize the problem instantly.

Instead of reacting after someone gets injured, these systems intervene early.

OEInlineRGB_NoTag_1200-1

Generally defined as "the coordinated theft of merchandise by two or more individuals for the purpose of reselling for financial gain," Organized Retail Crime (ORC) has consistently grown as a problem over the past decade and is projected to become even more of an issue in future years.

ORC costs retail businesses an average of $244,509 per case, the highest the case value has been in over 8 years. The same   report cited that theft has continued to grow year by year since 2020, with a 3.7% increase from 2022 to 2023. In October 2023, Target announced it was closing 9 stores across 4 states due to organized retail crime. Walmart has closed over 24 stores in 14 different states throughout 2023 due to theft and underperformance.

Read on to learn more about the impact ORC is having on today’s economic landscape, as well as how cloud video security can assist retailers’ loss prevention efforts and streamline investigations.

Fear of high premiums keeps cargo theft underreported

Much of the nation’s cargo theft problem may be hidden from sight – kept off the books intentionally by trucking companies attempting to control costs.

New data from the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) reveals that more than two-thirds of all motor carrier cargo theft incidents are valued below $50,000, meaning a significant share falls below typical deductibles.

Target and Walmart push back on new shoplifting, retail theft law

Retail theft has been growing, and retailers have been hesitant to take the steps needed to — if not stop it — at least reduce it.

Large retailers including Target and Walmart have used self-checkout as a way to spend less on labor.

They may claim that's not the reason and say that staff have been reassigned elsewhere, but there are fewer workers in the checkout area.
