How Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen’s Departure Impacts The Grocery Industry

The announcement of Rodney McMullen’s sudden departure as CEO of Kroger has sent shockwaves through the grocery industry. McMullen, who has been at the helm of Kroger since 2014, has been a pivotal figure in shaping the company’s strategy, particularly in navigating the challenges of a rapidly evolving retail landscape.

His resignation comes as the company launched an outside independent investigation last month, into his “personal conduct” which allegedly violated Kroger’s Policy on Business Ethics, but did not involve Kroger associates. Kroger’s board also added that the investigation was unrelated to the company’s financial performance, operations, and reporting.

A Blueprint for Retail Cyber Resilience: Evolving Tactics for Today’s Digital World

In the highly competitive retail market, businesses are leveraging technology to strengthen brand loyalty and enhance consumer experiences in ways that only science fiction writers could have imagined 40 years ago. Storefronts are eliminating the checkout process, augmented reality is reducing return rates and virtual marketplaces are offering new consumer experiences. But as retailers digitize operations to differentiate customer experiences, they also face a growing wave of cyber threats targeting sensitive customer data and critical business systems.

Walmart, Amazon, Target all face boycott threat

A 24-hour national boycott to protest Trump administration policies got underway on Friday, and while it’s uncertain what impact it will have, a new survey suggests that millions planned to participate.

The boycott, organized by a group known as The People’s Union USA, takes aim at retail companies that have reversed initiatives on diversity, equity, and inclusion since President Donald Trump returned to the White House.

“For generations our families worked, sacrificed, and fought to build a better future, yet here we stand, still waiting,” wrote The People’s Union USA founder John Schwarts on social media a few days prior to the boycott. “We the people will not wait any longer. We stand in solidarity to  honor the past and carve a new path for the future.”

Keeping Your Inventory Working for You

Managing inventory is critical for retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers, among others. "Business is about maximizing resources," says Steve Klein, a CPA with Gerson, Preston, Robinson & Co. in Miami Beach. He adds, "If something is sitting on the shelf too long, it's costing you space."

Tap information sources. Whether you use point-of-sale terminals that generate immediate information, a sales stub to later record purchases or even a simple visual control system, inventory should be monitored continuously.

Time purchases carefully. A manufacturing business must make sure that parts are on hand to meet production deadlines. Retailers must have enough merchandise to satisfy customer needs without overbuying inventory.

Cargo theft is a massive problem – what can be done about it?

Last week, a Senate subcommittee outlined the growing problem of cargo theft along the U.S. supply chain.

“Since the COVID pandemic, cargo theft has surged across the country, reaching by some calculations a decade-long high,” said Sen. Todd Young, R-Ind. “Homeland Security investigations estimate that the annual loss of cargo theft accounts between $15 billion and $35 billion annually.”

The wide range of crime includes hijacked trucks and rail cars, identity theft, double brokering, cybersecurity vulnerabilities and reroute schemes.

So, the good news is that the problem has been identified. But what can be done to fix it?

Gatekeeper Systems’ CartControl® solution ensures carts stay on-site, preventing waste and aligning with eco-friendly operations. Small changes can lead to big impacts—rethinking how retailers manage carts is a crucial step toward a more sustainable future.

From Walmart to Etsy, here are the potential winners and losers of Trump’s tariffs

This earnings season revealed that retailers are split on what Trump’s sweeping tariffs on a range of foreign imports could mean for their bottom lines. Big-box chains are sounding the alarm, warning that higher import costs could squeeze margins and force price hikes on consumers. But for others — including off-price retailers, e-commerce sites and secondhand apparel companies — tariffs could create unexpected opportunities, weakening competitors reliant on ultra-cheap Chinese goods. As Trump’s trade war heats up, the retail industry is bracing for a new economic divide: those that will benefit and those that will bear the cost.

Vallejo police arrest three suspects linked to high-end beauty product thefts

Vallejo police officers were assigned to the Vallejo Police Department Patrol Division who responded to reports of thefts that occurred at multiple retail stores on Tuesday.

Officials said that employees from two different businesses reported that the suspects stole high-end beauty products and fragrances before leaving in a BMV.

After the incident happened, an officer who was patrolling near Tuolumne Street and Sereno Drive found the suspect vehicle and conducted a felony traffic stop and there occupants were detained and placed in the rear of the patrol car, said VPD.

VPD said that when the officers searched the driver they found that the suspect had almost a month’s supply of unprescribed prescription pills, identified as Oxycodone, hidden in his sock, and over $1,300 in his pocket.

Authorities said that the second suspect who was seated in the back seat with the stolen merchandise was identified as the driver’s father who had prior theft convictions.

Suspect uses hammer to steal over $140,000 worth of items from JCPenney in Salinas

A suspect has been arrested after repeatedly using a hammer as a shopping tool at a JCPenney in Salinas.

According to the Salinas Police Department, the suspect stole $145,000 in items after using the hammer to smash through glass displays.

After multiple smash-and-grab heists were recently committed by the suspect, the Organized Retail Theft teams and some Loss Prevention Officers were able to track down the suspect and make an arrest, Salinas police said.

Salinas PD said in a statement, “Thanks to the outstanding teamwork and thorough investigation, the suspect in this case was successfully charged under the new California theft laws and recently sentenced to three years in prison. This is a prime example of how SPD’s ORT team collaborates with retail stores to hold offenders accountable and combat theft effectively.”
