President Trump has hiked import taxes on Chinese goods by 20% and is eyeing reciprocal tariffs. While the on-again, off-again tariffs on Canada and Mexico won't hit port volumes much, a new proposal to charge up to $1.5 million for Chinese-built ships docking in the U.S. could shake things up. This might lead to bigger ships and fewer port calls, especially hurting smaller ports. Import volumes are expected to dip in June and July, partly due to last year's port strike prep.

Hitting a seven-month low, the country's retail inflation slipped to 3.61 per cent in February, marking a decline of 65 basis points from January, mainly due to the dip in the rate of price rise in vegetables and protein-rich items, creating space for the Reserve Bank of India for second reduction in interest rate next month, the government said on Wednesday.
Signalling a respite for consumers amid the challenging economic climate, this marks the lowest inflation level since July 2024.
Comparatively, the consumer price index-based retail inflation was at 4.26 per cent in January and 5.09 per cent in February 2024.
The data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) revealed that the year-on-year inflation rate for February 2025 was 3.75 per cent.

A total of 142 stores closed and 129 opened for the month, according to data from ScrapeHero.com.

New data revealed a downturn in retail sales last month, impacted by tariff issues, rising unemployment rates, and severe winter conditions. According to Yahoo Finance, the National Retail Federation's Retail Monitor showed a decrease of over 0.2% in total seasonally adjusted retail sales, excluding automobiles and gas, for February as compared to January.

Matthew Shay, CEO of NRF, noted that consumers are spending cautiously due to fears of inflation and higher prices for essential goods. The market is now anticipating the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report due on Wednesday, which is expected to provide further insights into inflation trends.
